The US Food and Drug Administration and Illinois health regulators are investigating two deaths that might be associated with an herbal supplement made by Ton Shen Health/Life Rising, a Chicago-based Chinese medicine company.

The FDA confirmed that Life Rising DHZC-2 tablets - which are marketed as a "blood circulation regulator" - contained 56 times the amount of lead that would pose a health risk for children.

Ton Shen Health/Life Rising had issued a smaller recall of the tablets on Aug. 11 after one person reported getting sick due to possible lead contamination. On Monday it expanded the recall to include all lots purchased before Aug. 24 after additional incidents were reported.

Federal regulators at the FDA along with county and state health regulators are now investigating a total of six adverse event reports related to the supplement, including three children who became sick and the two fatalities.

No additional details about the deaths were immediately available, and the FDA stated on its website that "It is not clear if the deaths are associated with the product." Ton Shen Health/Life Rising did not immediately respond to BuzzFeed News' request for comment.

“Lead poisoning can occur when a person is exposed to high levels of lead over a short period of time,” said Nirav Shah, director of the Illinois Department of Public Health, in a statement.

Adult symptoms of lead poisoning can include abdominal pain, vomiting, lethargy, irritability, weakness, behavior or mood changes, delirium, seizures, and coma. Children and infants may not "look or act sick," according to the FDA, but lead poisoning in children can cause learning disabilities, developmental delays, and lower IQ scores.

“We urge people not buy the recalled supplement if they see it in stores, and for people who have purchased this product, to return it for a refund," said Shah. "The health effects of lead poisoning can be serious, and in some cases deadly.”

Life Rising was established by an herbalist and acupuncturist Zhengang Guo in 1985, according to the company's website. It has offices in Chicago, Westmon and Northbrook, Illinois.

21 Very Simple Tips For Brand New Runners

(And people who aspire to be runners.)

If you've ever kinda thought about maybe trying out running, you totally should go for it.

If you've ever kinda thought about maybe trying out running, you totally should go for it.

Hear me out.

• It's great for your cardiovascular health.

• And it can even be meditative.

• You don't need to pay membership or class fees.

• Or factor travel time into your workout.

• You can literally just run out of your front door, keep going, and that's a workout.

• If you start slowly with confidence in your ability to kick ass, you might just really like it.

But, yes OK, it can be intimidating if you have zero idea where to start. So, as a longtime runner who also happens to report on this stuff for a living, I thought I'd compile some tips from myself and fellow runners. Consider this your welcome wagon.

Have realistic expectations for your first few weeks of running.

Have realistic expectations for your first few weeks of running.

Your very first runs might feel really hard (though they shouldn't feel too hard; more on that later) and will probably challenge your resolve (maybe even more than they challenge your body). But after a few weeks it'll be easier to breathe and move and you won't feel as sore and you'll feel like a damn champion. Just know that the very beginning could be rough but that it'll definitely get better.

The right pair of running sneakers will mean a more comfortable run and lower risk of injury. Most running specialty stores can analyze your gait and tell you which sneakers will work best for the way your foot lands, the amount of cushioning you like, the kind of terrain you're running on, and how many miles you're running each week.

Planned Parenthood Is Going To 25,000 Miami Homes To Warn About Zika And Sex

Planned Parenthood

Planned Parenthood is sending canvassers to knock on 25,000 doors in Miami, to warn women in the Little Haiti and Little Havana neighborhoods of the severe birth defect risks linked to the Zika virus.

"You'd be surprised how many women we are finding don't even know that Zika is sexually transmitted," Lillian Tamayo, president and CEO of Planned Parenthood of South, East and North Florida, told BuzzFeed News. "We are stepping in because there is an urgent need here."

Since the start of a Zika epidemic in Brazil last year, the virus has spread to about 50 countries, accompanied by a wave of nearly 2,000 cases of the shrunken brain and skull birth defect called microcephaly. The virus is most often spread by mosquito bites, and sometimes through sex.

US health officials warned pregnant women last week to avoid travel to Miami-Dade County, home to 2.7 million people, following mosquito-borne infections of the Zika virus in two Miami neighborhoods, Wynwood and South Miami Beach. Florida health officials have confirmed 42 Zika cases tied to mosquito bites there, as of Tuesday.

For the next six weeks, Planned Parenthood will also provide Zika prevention kits, with bug spray, condoms, water treatment tablets, and dental dams to Miami women who are pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant. The CDC strongly advises pregnant women to use condoms if they or their partner have travelled to a Zika-afflicted region. They should take these precautions for at least eight weeks, and up to six months if have had symptoms such as rashes, red eyes, and fever.

"We are talking to residents who feel they have been neglected, and (they) are surprised by things they didn't know about Zika," community canvasser Lenroy Watt, who is working on behalf of Planned Parenthood, told BuzzFeed News. While most people had heard of Zika, many didn't know that transmission during pregnancy caused birth defects, he said. "People get very serious when they hear this for the first time. It surprises them."

On Tuesday, Florida governor Rick Scott also announced that the state would start investigating a possible Zika case caused by a mosquito bite in Tampa, on the other side of the state. At Scott's direction, all Florida health departments offer pregnant women free Zika tests, but Tamayo complained that Scott had focused the state's efforts on mosquito control, rather than addressing sexual transmission and preventing its spread.

Planned Parenthood and Scott have been in a federal court battle over his efforts to cut the reproductive health group's funding over its abortion services, a fight which ended last week in a victory for Planned Parenthood.

What to Do If You Get a Black Toenail From Running

Q: One of my toenails is turning black-and-blue from running. Should I be concerned?

A: Bruising or slight bleeding beneath a nail is a common runner's injury. Your toe may be bumping against the inside of your sneaker as you run, creating a blood blister under the nail. Check if your shoes are the right size, either by visiting a special running shoe shop or by measuring the space between the tip of your longest toe and the end of the shoe-you want a thumb's width of room. Consider reducing the amount of running you're doing or lessening the intensity so that your toenail can heal without repeated stress.

RELATED: These Workout Mistakes May Not Be as Bad as You Think

As long as you're not in pain, leave the nail alone. It may eventually fall off, and a new one will grow. If your toe is throbbing and sensitive because of an accumulation of blood under the nail, your doctor may need to make a hole in the nail to relieve the pressure. Do not try to do this by yourself; it could lead to an infection and more pain.

I also encourage you to see a doctor if the dark spot covers more than a quarter of the nail or if it doesn't go away after six months. Sometimes a fungal infection will turn a toenail very dark and thicken it, which requires an over-the-counter or prescription antifungal medication. In super-rare cases, a black spot beneath a nail may be a skin cancer, so it's best to let your doctor assess the discoloration.

13 Awesome Tattoos With A Secret Behind Them

"My sophomore year of high school I fell during a trampoline routine at gymnastics practice and shattered my left arm. After eight months of surgeries... I was left with an arm that not only hurt constantly and didn't work, but also didn't look like my own.

Surgeries to remove dead muscle and scar tissue had distorted my forearm, and the scars scattered across my arm and hand felt unsightly and ugly. This tattoo, my first, was a present to myself when I turned 18 as a way to reclaim my body after it had been irreparably damaged, and to turn my scars into something beautiful. I didn't want to cover up the surgical scars because they were, and are, such an important part of who I am now, but I wanted to transform them into something I was proud of. The bird is an eastern bluebird."

These Weed Vaginal Suppositories Relieve Period Cramps

weed-for-your-period

We all experience it – some of us worse than others. But all of us can agree, it is, for the most part, our least favorite week of the month. Yes, we are talking about our periods, ladies.

Once a month, women experience excess bloating, cramping, and discomfort that sometimes leaves them in the fetal position and missing out on work or other responsibilities.

When that time of the month comes, the protocol is to head to the medicine cabinet, pop some ibuprofen and hopefully get on with our days. However, in most cases, the cramping remains. That is why a company called Foria created a new way to ease the pain without popping any pills.

Enter the marijuana vaginal suppository called Foria Relief, which is said to ease pain and discomfort caused by PMS symptoms. This is not to be confused with a tampon, although they are inserted the same.

Screen Shot 2016-08-15 at 11.50.28 AM

The suppository uses good-for-you ingredients such as organic fair trade cocoa butter along with distilled THC oil, and CBD isolate from organically grown hemp – the two active ingredients in cannabis.

According to the Foria website, these elements activate the cannabinoid receptors in your pelvic area and positively affect the nerves in your uterus, cervix, ovaries, and surrounding muscle tissue, blocking pain and allowing more pleasure signals to be sent to the brain while suppressing inflammation and easing tense muscles.

After 20 minutes I begin feeling a lower sensation. It was very nice and relaxing.

Marijuana use is very popular when it comes to pain relief. It is also recommended by many doctors and has been used for medicinal purposes for cancer patients, inflammatory diseases, and injury. This marijuana suppository was created with your wellness and period cramps in mind, hoping to help ease the pain without having to take over-the-counter medication.

We know what your first question is: Do these get you high? The answer is no; these weed tampons won't get you high. They will simply ease your pain and are particularly useful for those suffering from dysmenorrhea, a fancy word for really, really, really bad period cramps.

These weed tampons won't get you high. They will simply ease your pain.

According to the reviews on their website, after insertion, it takes around 8-10 minutes for the medicinal properties to begin working. You will feel a soothing sensation, and start to experience cramp relief. Across the board, the reviews for this product are satisfactory. Reviewers are using words like “life changing,” “effective,” “outstanding,” and “amazing” to describe this product.

With research continuing to advance, we keep finding more ways that medicinal marijuana is a game changer in the health world. Weed, cannabis – whatever you want to call it – is no longer seen as a negative influence, but rather a positive alternative to prescription drugs, relieving you of pain, and helping you relax without the fear of overdosing, becoming addicted, or causing more harm to your body.

Foria's goal is just that – to combine the power of cannabis to create healthy, natural, and healing products that make your time of the month a little less distressing.

This Olympic Rower Just Won Gold By A Thousandth Of A Second

BE STILL MY BEATING HEART.

On Saturday, the men's single sculling finals took place in Rio and it turned out to be one of the closest finishes in Olympic history.

Sculling is a rowing technique where the athlete propels the boat forward using two oars, on either side of the boat - as opposed to sweeping, where each rower has one oar on either side of the boat.

The single scull event has only one rower in each boat, so one athlete represents each country. The nations competing for gold in the men's sculling final included Poland, Cuba, Belarus, New Zealand, Croatia, Mexico, Czech Republic, and Belgium.

Drysdale won gold in the men's single sculls in 2012, making him the defending champion. But Martin also won gold at the 2012 Olympics in the quadruple sculling event.

By the last 500 meters of the race on Saturday, Martin had a clear lead, but Drysdale began inching up on the Croatian as they got closer to the finish line.

Initially, the crowd erupted in applause for Martin, but it suddenly became clear that the clocks showed that both men finished at the exact same time, down to the hundredth (.01) of a second. The crowd became silent and everyone was confused and shocked, including Martin and Drysdale.

Both men finished in 6:41:34, which meant the winner would be decided by one thousandth (.001) of a second.

One thousandth of a second is such a short unit of time that it didn't even show up on the racing clocks initially.

Judges had to use a photo from the finish to determine who actually won - and the whole thing came down to a difference of just one centimeter. ONE. CENTIMETER.

Plain old bile is a green liquid that our liver produces to break down fats, but as bile travels through our GI system it gets metabolized, and the byproduct is creates is stercobilin, which our bodies don't need and gets promptly disposed of when we poop. Have You Heard of These 10 Trending Yoga Styles

10_trending_yoga_styles_featured_image

You've done it. You have found a style of yoga that fits you and you are a grateful yogi. Maybe you have begun to learn more about yourself and your own yoga practice, possibly feeling a little more courageous on your mat.

We will always be grateful for yoga and its amazing offerings, but what if we want to spice things up a bit?

The answer? It's easy! Take this newfound courage, this newfound you, and have fun exploring – and deepening – your yoga practice. Yoga has entered the western world full throttle and with that arrival, there is plenty of opportunity to get creative and expressive with your practice, with emerging and evolving yoga disciplines to fit any personality and preference.

We will always be grateful for yoga and its amazing offerings, but what if we want to spice things up a bit?

Here are 10 exciting yoga trends you need to know about (if you haven't already heard):

1. Buti Yoga

If you still have that club girl vibe deep inside of you or if you often find yourself practicing some Beyonće moves in the mirror, you need to get to a Buti Yoga class. Now.

This is a high energy, bass-bumping practice that encourages the practitioner to let loose and explore the confident and powerful force within. With an unbeatable mixture of tribal dance, yoga poses and plyometrics, you are sure to find a new sense of freedom, rawness and empowerment on the mat.

2. SUP Yoga (Stand Up Paddleboard) or Paddleboard Yoga

I am a Pisces, so anything on the water is a plus! If you feel that same calling to the water, or if you want to really challenge your balance and connection, jump on a paddleboard and practice yoga! It will bring a new perspective to every pose.

The paddleboards are about 10-12 feet long and you can practice in a pool, river, lake or ocean. There are several SUP Yoga classes floating around (pun intended), so a quick search should do the trick. You can wear whatever makes you comfortable, just as long as it can get wet.

And just like any yoga practice, make this your own. You can slow down and really connect with the sound and rhythm of the water. Or you can fuel your inner fire and make it as challenging as you like. Handstand anyone?

3. Weed Yoga or High Yoga

As cannabis becomes legal in more states, many yogis feel this duo works well for them. Experiencing yoga while high allows many of the practitioners to lose any inhibitions that would normally hold them back in a regular setting.

It is important to have a good knowledge of your yoga practice as well as your response to cannabis before practicing in a group setting. If you are 100% against giggling in class, you might want to skip this trend. But if you are interested in exploring a heightened consciousness or channeling your high to something more meaningful, this option may be could work for you.

Side note: Many yogis feel consuming marijuana is against what yoga is about. They feel that putting toxins into your body and altering your state of consciousness is not the yogic way. But with anything in life, if you are not harming others . . . do what works for you.

4. Doga

Fur mamas rejoice! You no longer have to leave your fur baby at home when you go to yoga.! We all know dogs bring joy into our lives, so of course they will bring joy to our yoga practice! Doga is a style of yoga connecting you and your dog during your yoga class. Yogis and their furry partners sync their energies through poses, massage and meditation.

It is an opportunity to be fully present with your dog. To experience the poses together and invite the calming energies for both. With this being a partner class, the hands- on healing your dog will experience could help him overcome certain fear and anxiety.

5. Aerial Yoga

“Weeeeeeeeeeeee!” Okay, I got that out of the way. Aerial Yoga is another style that continues to gain in popularity and can offer an amazing addition to your yoga practice. A silk-like hammock provides the yogi with a different opportunity to explore and expand your practice.

There are a number of benefits; gain more mobility in the body, decompress the spine, safely explore your inversion practice (and the many benefits that go along with being upside-down), build strength not only by moving through the silk during your practice but while being suspended, plus you have more opportunity to feel the natural alignment in many postures.

Aside from the freedom to connect with your inner playful side, Aerial Yoga allows the yogi to explore different connections with the body above the mat, and then take those connections with you back to the mat.

6. Broga®

We love our yoga dudes and we would love to see more in our classes. If you, or another male you know would feel more comfortable beginning yoga in a male only class, here is one to try.

Broga® was designed with the male yogi in mind to cater to what men are looking for in a fitness routine and relying heavily on yoga to provide that service. These classes leave the yogi feeling energized and strong – similar to the gym experience – but also feeling more flexible and mindful.

They offer many online classes, in-studio classes, retreats and teacher trainings in any setting! Again, these classes are great for beginner male yogis as well as seasoned athletes.

Broga Yoga –>

7. Acro Yoga

AcroYoga is making its way around the yoga world and it is only getting stronger. By now you may have seen pictures or videos of this partner practice which probably left you in utter amazement. This practice combines acrobatics and yoga in the form of partner work. There is a base, flyer and spotter, so the opportunity for community is amazing.

The base provides the platform for the flyer. T, together they can create not only amazing movements and poses, but a therapeutic practice as well. This practice requires trust in your partner, communication and a sense of unity.

If you are thinking nostalgically back to your days as a youngin' when you would lie on your back and your friend would “fly” on your feet, you should try AcroYoga.

Acro Yoga –>

8. Aqua Yoga

Take your yoga into warm water and benefit from this low-impact practice. Similar to a water aerobics class, the buoyancy from the water makes this yoga discipline easy on the joints and great for gently adding strength and flexibility.

Typically the instructor will remain on the pool deck and demonstrate the poses. Many yoga poses you practice on land can transition easily into the water. And just like on your mat, props are used in the water in the form of pool noodles and the wall. Fun!

Students can expect to gain a deep sense of calm and meditation from the healing aspects of the water as well as experiencing poses that may not be easily accessible on your mat.

Aqua Yoga–>

9. Nude Yoga or Naked Yoga

Although this is not a new scene (some yogis dating back to the 8th century practiced naked to achieve a deeper sense of spirituality), Nude Yoga is gaining popularity. Upon entering the West in 1960, Nude Yoga is less about sexuality and more about acceptance and learning to love your body.

Yogis are encouraged to practice naked to become more connected with themselves and to rid the mind of any shame or negativity. Even though our culture is less open to nudity, this may give you an opportunity to identify and get more comfortable with your body.

Check out Nude Yoga Girl's video and see her practice. She is a great example of the connection and appreciation to be found while practicing in the nude.

10. Laughter Yoga

I recently saw a video online of a busy subway transporting people on their daily commute. Everyone looked tired, cramped and sluggish. Then a man watching a video on his tablet while wearing headphones began laughing. Not quiet, shy laughing. But goofy, awesome, can't-help-but-laugh-with-him laughing. And that is exactly what everyone did – the entire subway car began laughing and smiling together. It was beautiful.

Laughter Yoga allows people to gather and laugh. The fake laughs turn into real laughs and the mind and body benefit. Think of how you feel after a good, gut-filled laugh. Same rule applies here. Yogis may do breathwork, stretch or chant to come together as a group before beginning their laughing session.

Giggle on yogis!

Laughter Yoga –>

Any type of Yoga will boost your strength, balance and flexibility. Sometimes it is a great idea to challenge yourself and switch things up. These are just a few of the many trending yoga styles that are being practiced everyday and are continuing to gain popularity.

Are you currently practicing any of these newer styles of yoga? Have they helped your practice in any way? Let us know your experiences or leave some advice for those of us who have not branched out yet!

Here are our summer reading picks:

The Heart's Code: Tapping the Wisdom and Power of Our Heart Energy

By: Paul Pearsall

The human heart is an extraordinary energy vortex. It not only has the power to remember past experiences and store them, it also has the ability to communicate with other hearts and stores information to take into future lives.

the_hearts_code_web

The Heart's Code is a synthesis of wisdom combined with science and modern day facts. Most people place a lot of emphasis on the brain and how the mind works. The Heart's Code proves it is actually the heart that is needed to connect mind, body and spirit. This book has changed millions of lives by focusing more on feelings and finding new ways of living. The heart has a code, and this book is the key to unlock it.

“The brain is always in a hurry, preparing its body to go somewhere and uncomfortable with “just being” anywhere. The heart however thinks in a more gentle, relaxed connective way searching for love energy and lasting relationships.” – Paul Pearsall

The book starts out with a story about a young girl who received a heart transplant from a patient who was murdered, and when she recovered from the surgery she had dreams about who the killer was. She was able to locate the killer and serve justice to the victim who was murdered, all because the heart remembered. We just have to learn to tap into it.

A Return to Love

By: Marianne Williamson

A Return to Love is a powerful read. Williamson explains how each of us can become a miracle worker. The only thing we have to learn is how to accept God and Love into our lives.

a_return_to_love_web

“Ultimately it is not our credentials but our commitment to a higher purpose that creates our effectiveness in the world.” – Marianne Williamson

In our Western society, we are goal-oriented, and most of us focus only on the the “end” result. Williamson explains the illusion we have that our worth is measured by what we've achieved, and that at the end of the day, it is not our credentials that define us. It is our connection with a higher power that creates the true and lasting effectiveness we have on this world.

She shows us how to love, and not just other people, but the deepest parts of ourselves. The dark areas that are easy to shy away from. Living the “good” life has nothing to do with possessions or status. The magic is in serving others, trusting your higher power, and knowing that love is not scarce.

The Seat of the Soul

By: Gary Zukav

Zukav gives readers wonderful encouragement on how to become the authority in your own life in his book The Seat of the Soul. It will change the way you understand your own actions and the way you see the world – intention being the key to everything we do.

the_seat_of_the_soul_web

We all handle life in our own ways, and we are either motivated by pure and good intentions or by egocentric, manipulative intentions. Once we are clear on the intention behind everything we do, we take responsibility for our own actions and build enduring self-esteem and self-trust.

Zukav takes you on a journey exploring the phase humanity has now entered. He explains that humanity is moving away from being a species that sees power as external – as things we can manipulate and control – to a species that craves alignment with the soul, focusing more on the spirit. A new world is emerging, and this book brings the message to you.

Many Lives, Many Masters

By: Dr. Brian Weiss

Based on a true story from a psychotherapist's experience with a patient who was undergoing past life trauma, Many Lives, Many Masters is a powerful read that uncovers remarkable revelations about life, existence, and past lives.

many_lives_many_masters_web

Not only was Dr. Weiss able to cure the patient, but he was able to embark on a powerful life-changing career. He focuses on how all humans come into this world with past life trauma and patterns. He explains we are meant to “fix” these traumas in this lifetime, or we come back in the next with the same occurring checklists.

Everyone has a story, and everyone we come in contact with is there for a reason. If you believe in reincarnation, or want to learn more about it, this book is for you!

Yoga and Ayurveda: Self-Healing and Self-Realization

By: Dr. David Frawley

Yoga and Ayurveda: Self-Healing and Self-Realization looks at a complete approach for optimal health. There are 3 main doshas (mixture of elements in your body), and knowing which one you are can help determine what sleep cycle you should be on, what food you should eat, and which exercises are “good” for your dosha type.

The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health: A Lifelong Guide to Wellness

By: Linda Sparrowe

The Woman's Book of Yoga and Health was written with a focus on women's health issues and how to treat them with restorative yoga. I was a little skeptical about this text, but once I dove in and practiced the sequences offered, I was hooked.

Usually my preferred yoga practice is vinyasa, and this text taught me how to slow down and love my body. Through this slowed down approach, you will notice shifts in your stress levels, adrenal glands, muscle memory and brain activity.

The yoga sequences were created for all ailments including menstruation, headaches, stress, fatigue, weight loss, weight gain and much more. It is written in a textbook format so you can skip ahead as you like and read the chapters that appeal to you in that moment. With sections from teen years through menopause, this guidebook will serve as a constant reference.

Bhagavad Gita: The Beloved Lord's Secret Love Song

By: Graham M. Schweig

There are hundreds of translations of the Bhagavad Gita and I find this one to be an “easier” read yet still very informative. I recommend this version because there is an excellent pronunciation guide and expert commentary at the bottom of each page for better understanding. To deepen your knowledge as a yogi, you must know the story of the Gita!

The Bhagavad Gita is a beautiful poem/story written to teach us the about the connection to the Supreme, and to let go of personal desires and fears. We must do what our duty is in this life, without question and without the fear of pain.

The Gita's story is about a young Prince Arjuna whose duty is to kill his enemies and go to war against his entire family, friends, teachers and peers. To summarize – Prince Arjuna is faced with fear, guilt and sadness when put to the task, so he seeks Krishna the Supreme for guidance. It is a powerful story about how this relates to everything we do in our own lives and how to find our own dharma, or life purpose.

Psst! Want to read more about the Bhagavad Gita? Check this out!

Based on what you've read in this article and your reaction to it, I invite you to pick the book or books that speak to you. You might choose something that speaks to you in the moment now, or you might choose something that you will want later in life. Let your mind, spirit and heart take in these amazing soul opening experiences, stories and information. Your soul will thank you!!

"And then other friends who had asked to come started suggesting props, and then costumes, and then we got into the habit of brainstorming a theme a couple of weeks out," she said.
