Here's Why Your Period Is Late, Missing, Or Weird

For when that period is actually a question mark.

Most of us have a love/hate relationship with our periods.

Most of us have a love/hate relationship with our periods.

We hate them and we never want to see them again, but... if we're gonna see them again, we'd at least like to KNOW when we're gonna see them again.

Which is what makes it even more frustrating when your period decides to go rogue and get all weird on you. Wtf, period.

Twitter: @hellolanemoore

Note: This is not an exhaustive list and is not meant to be a substitute for medical advice. If your period is acting weird, call your doctor.

OK, are you sure you're not pregnant?

OK, are you sure you're not pregnant?

This is obviously this first thing you'll want to cross off the list, even if you've been super careful or using birth control. "Half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are unplanned," Dr. Mary Jane Minkin, clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Yale School of Medicine, tells BuzzFeed Health.

And it's not just late or missing periods that could signal pregnancy. You can also get irregular bleeding at the beginning of a pregnancy, which many people mistake for an early period, says Minkin. So if your period is early/late/missing, and it's even remotely possible that you could be pregnant, go ahead and pee on a stick.

Maybe you're just really stressed.

Maybe you're just really stressed.

Fun fact: Ovulation actually starts in the brain with the pituitary gland. Things like stress, anxiety, travel, moving — those can all throw off the connection between the pituitary gland and your ovaries, Dr. Lauren Streicher, associate clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University and author of Sex Rx, tells BuzzFeed Health. And when the ovulation cycle gets screwed up, so does your period.

BUT stress will not affect your period if you're taking hormonal birth control. That's because contraception like the pill, ring, implant, and IUD all work to regulate your cycle. So if you're on hormonal birth control, ovulation wouldn't be the one giving you a monthly period — your birth control would be, says Minkin.

Yoga Will Save the World. Here's How.

yoga-will-save-the-world

I had just completed a 30-day meditation retreat in Thailand. We spent 16+ hours a day in silence. It was the hardest thing I'd ever done in my life.

Through this experience, I saw deeply that we are perfect, peaceful and courageous people. I knew clearly that we are all made of the same stock.

We are meant to create a peaceful world by slowing down our minds and looking within to see that we are not the confused people that create a confused culture. The mantra I now carry deep within the fabric of my soul is, Peaceful minds = peaceful planet.

"We are the ones we've been waiting for." - Hopi Elder

Then, at a Dallas airport catching a connecting flight, it all came crashing down. You know how airports force you to watch CNN? It's there on a big screen, at every gate, the volume cranked.

That TV screen yelled to us a version of reality that just can't be true.

I cried deeply. I sat balled up in tears, embarrassed for my emotional state but more deeply embarrassed for our culture.

On that screen - in 30-second sound bites - was an on-going report about our confused, depressed, angry and often violent, sick culture. As if I needed to experience this, my next flight was delayed. Story after story droned on.

I kept repeating to myself, "This can't be true. This can't be what our culture is all about. This isn't the reality that I see or want for my kids."

In 24-hour news cycle style, reports blared directly into my newly unearthed peaceful mind that KNEW on a cellular level that we are not only CAPABLE of peace, but that we ARE PEACE.

We are NOT our angry, depressed, stressed minds - that's only confusion covering the reality of our perfection.

We ALL possess a potential that is pure, perfect and peaceful.

The reporters - themselves looking stressed, tense and sickly-pale - spoke quickly and often angrily with a tone of fear in their voice. They told us about wars, political polarization, lack of oil, school shootings, obesity, diabetes, stress, tension, shorter lifespans, addiction, hatred, global warming, poverty, lack, and oh yeah . . . the coming storm that would destroy us all.

I almost dismissed it all as post-retreat overwhelm.

Maybe it's just me being overly sensitive. Maybe that's just "the way the world is." Who am I to question it?

Then the 1999 Columbine shootings. 2001: the World Trade Center bombing. Fast forward years later - me now a father of two sweet little ones - to the 2012 Sandy Hook shooting.

NO, this is NOT US. This is NOT what OUR culture should do.

We've become numb to the stories of our culture. If you weren't yet numbed to it - like me at the Dallas airport more than 15 years ago - you wouldn't be able to handle it either. You too would be balled up on the floor crying for the culture we have co-created.

Maybe we should be that appalled by the current state of our society. Maybe the problem is that we are not appalled; we are numb.

The good news is over the years, I've formed an alternate view of reality. I've discovered yoga.

And yoga - when unpacked and put into practice on its deepest level - is what will save the world.

Yoga is returning us to sanity. Yoga is the medicine that is curing our sickness.

One by one we are applying and sharing the science of yoga, which is really the science of peace.

One by one we are seeing clearly that our minds were simply confused - like storm clouds covering a crystal clear sky. We are beginning to see that suffering, fear, anger, depression - all the afflictive mental states that come together to co-create this painful CNN reality - are OPTIONAL.

I believe that we'll each come to rest in the deep knowing on a cellular level that we are absolutely perfect peaceful beings. And you know what peaceful minds do?

Peaceful minds create a peaceful planet.

"You may say I'm a dreamer, but I'm not the only one. I hope someday you'll join us. And the world will live as one." - John Lennon

Lady Gaga Grammy Performance 2016 - Tribute To David Bowie

Lady Gaga Grammy Performance 2016 - Tribute To David BowieLady Gaga Grammy Performance 2016 - Tribute To David Bowie

For all of us who missed the Grammys 2016 you missed among the best homages to David Bowie I know of. The Lady Gaga Grammy performance was a psychological experience as you would expect. For her, the grammy performance was very personal. Gaga posted an Instagram video of herself crying backstage as her Bowie makeup was being applied %u2013 who could blame her. If if wasn't for your daring high risk career of bowie she could have never wished for taking on the personas she's infamously famous for. She took us on the ride inside the vast expanding and contracting Bowie universe covering all of the music icons top hist. This song of choice to file for us to the cosmos of Bowie was none other than Space Oddity with computer animated graphics projected to be with her face.

Unfortunately, not everyone took a liking on the Lady Gaga's Grammy performance to David Bowie. There have been many negative posts on twitter calling it blasphemous and so on. In defense of Gaga, I'd like for all your haters to inquire about themselves a very important factor, who on the planet will be more allowed to honor bowie? There isn't anyone on the planet who could have done bowie better and yes it wasn't a performance being ridiculed but praised because in the end, it really is one artist paying tribute to a legend that changed her lifetime. If we were to offer any critique it would be that the songs were cut quite short 2013 some songs a couple verses were sang. We could%u2019t blame the performance being abrupt on Kesha or perhaps the Grammys. At fault needs to be upon us the folks. Were so obsessive about the fast fix our attention span has shrunk to time shorter compared to a fish. If individuals were enthusiastic about media which had substance, heart, soul, and passion the performers wouldn%u2019t ought to go cheap. In the event the masses are not enthusiastic about cheap bubble gum pop music we would have an overabundance artists like Bowie emerging. Bowie a message, he'd substance, and even more importantly he had a heart and a soul. He dared to face versus the man When we shout out and sing lyrics like bitch better have my money by way of example, what you form of message am i creating in to the world? As opposed to lyrics like We all can be heroes, just first day.

3 Valentine's Day Recipes for a Romantic Breakfast in Bed

valentines-day-breakfast-in-bed

When you spend Valentine's Day with your sweetie, one of the most romantic gestures you can do for them is to make breakfast in bed. Eggs and toast are great, but here are three recipes to make your Valentine's Day breakfast sweeter. The following recipes are also plant-based, healthier and more fun than traditional breakfast staples!

Raspberry Chocolate Chia Pudding Parfait

pudding

The fastest of all three recipes, this pudding parfait is not only full of chocolate, but it is made with a superfood: chia. Chia pudding can be made the night before, meaning you won't be in the kitchen for too long in the morning! Just assemble and serve. The pudding tastes great alone or topped with berries!

  • 1/4 cup chia seeds

  • 1 cup plant-based milk (almond, soy, or coconut)

  • 2 tbsp sweetener (agave, honey, or maple syrup)

  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • Suggested toppings: choice of yogurt, raspberries and chocolate shavings

Whisk together the above ingredients (without the toppings) and let them sit overnight in the fridge, covered. When you're ready to prepare and serve, top the pudding with your choice of dairy-free or traditional yogurt. Next, layer frozen raspberries, granola, chocolate shavings, or your choice of toppings.

Chocolate Dark Cherry Pancakes

pancakes

This recipe takes pancakes to a new level! As your valentine snoozes, put together the best plate of pancakes they'll ever devour. Combining dark cherries and chocolate makes this holiday breakfast feel extra special.

  • 1 cup all purpose or whole wheat flour

  • 1 tsp of brown or coconut sugar

  • 1/4 tsp baking soda

  • 1/4 tsp baking powder

  • 1/4 tsp salt

  • 1 tbsp unsweetened cocoa powder

  • 1 tbsp flax egg (stir 1 tbsp of flax with 3 tbsp of water)

  • 1 tbsp coconut oil, melted

  • 1 tsp apple cider vinegar

  • 1 cup dairy-free milk (unsweetened vanilla almond milk is suggested)

First prepare the flax egg and set aside. Then, combine the dry ingredients in a medium bowl. Add milk to the dry mixture and whisk until a batter is formed. On low heat, grease the pan using coconut oil cooking spray or dairy-free butter. Once the pan is heated, pour a quarter-cup of batter into the pan to form each pancake. Cook the pancakes about 1-2 minutes on each side.

Then, for an extra sweet treat, top your pancakes with a homemade cherry syrup. Yummm.

Cherry syrup:

  • 1/2 cup dark cherries (frozen)

  • 1/2 cup of agave nectar or maple syrup

Over medium heat, cook the cherries and sweetener, stirring often. The mixture will become a sweet cherry compote to top the chocolate pancakes.

Strawberry Almond Baked Oatmeal

baked-oatmeal

This strawberry almond baked oatmeal is last, but certainly not least. Oatmeal is the perfect balance of healthy and hearty, yet the red berries and melted dark chocolate make this the perfect Valentine's Day treat. It can also be enjoyed the day after, since the recipe serves 6! Simply reheat and serve.

  • 2 cups rolled oats

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1 tsp baking powder

  • 1 tbsp cinnamon

  • 1/2 tsp salt

  • 1 cup sliced almonds

  • 1 cup strawberries

  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate dairy-free chips (optional)

  • 2 cups plant-based milk

  • 2 tbsp dairy-free butter, melted

  • 1 tsp vanilla or almond extract

  • 1 ripe banana, sliced

Preheat the oven to 375 degrees. Spray a 2-qt pan with cooking spray. In a large bowl, mix together the oats, brown sugar, baking powder, cinnamon, salt, half the almonds, half the chocolate chips and half the strawberries. In a medium bowl, mix together the milk, butter and vanilla extract. Add the oat mixture to the baking dish. Add the remaining almonds, chocolate chips, and strawberries. Add the banana slices in a single layer on top. Pour the milk mixture over the oats, making sure the oats are soaked evenly. Bake for 30-40 minutes.

Here are three plant-based breakfasts and three yummy breakfast ideas to share on Valentine's Day with your loved one. Remember that great food is best when it's eaten in the company of someone you care about. Take Valentine's Day morning as a chance to be mindful, present, and grateful for those you have in your life.

Also, share these recipes with your little valentines! The natural sweetener options and vegan swaps will go unnoticed by young children. Happy Valentine's Day sweet, sweet yogis!

15 Reasons to Drink Green Tea Every Day

reasons-to-drink-green-tea

The tradition of drinking green tea began in China more than 4,000 years ago. Today, due to the numerous medicinal and wellness benefits, it is no wonder that green tea has become a staple in many households worldwide.

Chances are that you have had a cup of green tea in your lifetime. While all green tea is made from Camellia sinensis leaves, depending on the country of origin and the manufacturing process that the tea leaves have undergone, your cup of tea will taste vastly different. Chinese green teas are traditionally pan-fired to protect the flavor, giving them an earthy and sometimes bitter taste. In Japan, green tea leaves are rolled and lightly steamed, which gives them a delicate and refreshing flavor. When you shop for green tea, keep in mind the country of origin to select your preferred flavor profile. However, it is also important to look for high-quality green tea brands that are certified organic and produced without pesticides or other harmful chemicals and preservatives.

Drinking just a cup or two of green tea each day can do wonders for your health and well-being. You have probably heard of the excellent levels of antioxidants in green tea, but did you know that it can help you burn belly fat, prevent cancer, and offers many more benefits to your mind and body?

Here are 15 reasons to drink green tea every day:

Anti-Aging

Green tea contains large amounts of nutrients and powerful antioxidants that reduce the formation of free radicals in your body and protect your cells from damage that cause premature aging. When applied topically, green tea can also reduce existing sun damage.

Improved Memory

Green tea drinkers have been found to have higher function in the memory center of their brains. In the short term, green tea can improve your brain function in areas that process and store information. Long term, it can protect your brain and has the ability to delay the progression of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Energy

Green tea contains caffeine, but not as much as coffee. When you drink green tea, you will get the benefits of caffeine, without the jittery side effects associated with excess caffeine that a cup or two of joe contains.

Improved Mood

This powerful tea contains amino acids, including L-theanine, which reduce anxiety and increase dopamine in your brain. Green tea improves your brain function and provides a relaxing and uplifting effect on your mind to combat symptoms of depression.

Fat Burner

Green tea is a key ingredient in many fat-burning supplements, and it is there for good reason! Green tea can boost your metabolic rate and can aid in weight loss through its fat-burning potential, specifically fat in your abdominal region. Bye bye belly fat!

Antibacterial

Green tea contains catechins, which have strong antibacterial and antiviral properties. Catechins can kill bacteria and inhibit the spread of diseases. Take that influenza!

Relaxation

Drinking tea can be a relaxing, ritualistic experience. Green tea contains theanine, a chemical that has a calming effect that can help put your mind and body at ease. Sip on green tea before and after meditation to help free your mind of stresses and worries.

Pain Relief

Green tea contains quercetin,an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant compound that can reduce inflammation in your body. Studies have shown that green tea can also reduce the likelihood of developing arthritis. Drink green tea now for a strong and limber yoga body later.
